Thinking about Holy Island

Hi friends.

I have been thinking a lot about Holy Island. Partly, I am dreaming about going back there when I can. I am also writing a book about the place. One of the ways I have always got myself to sleep, is by remembering a route I took and following it in my mind. Each night, I picture myself walking on Lindisfarne. Well, it works for me!

It is odd that when I think about this holy place it isn’t the church or priory there that really inspire me. They are fine. But it is the island itself that touched my soul – the sounds of the place, the trees and birds, the seals, the quality of light. It is one of those liminal places where we feel closer to God and his creation does all the work.

For the Celtic Christians, God was in everything – in places and people and even in their daily rituals. This lovely Celtic prayer is to be said while dressing in the morning. Go on, give it a go.

Bless to me, O God
My soul and my body,
Bless to me, O God,
My belief and my condition.

Bless to me, O God,
My heart and my speech,
And bles to me, O God,
The handling of my hand….

…Till I go to sleep this night;
Thine path, O God.
